National Orange Show Winner 2024: 2nd Place, Citrus Category

There were three guiding principles in creating this painting. First, that my love for this particular tree would be apparent in every brush stroke. Second, that the piece be a true study in edges, with sharp and soft edges leading the viewer through the piece. And third, that it would adhere to our local Spring light schema, conveying a subtle warmth in the daytime air laden with the smell of blossoms.

I was surprised that painting hundreds of leaves was not onerous. They each had a personality, tone, tilt, and softness or sharpness of edge. Understanding the architecture of the leaves was key. Painting the grapefruit – “citrus paradisi” in Latin – at the end was an exercise in restraint. Instead of making the fruit the subject, I wanted to trick the eye to look past it and into the blossoms just beyond.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable piece to create. I’m honored it was awarded in the Orange Show.

This and its corresponding piece “LaQuats, Innocent!” are the first of a series where I use repurposed paperboard as a base and creative conversation. In this case, the base is a LaCroix sparkling water box, adhered to a canvas that has my original photography of our loquat tree. On the cardboard part, a separate part of the same tree is painted in oil.

The word “Pure” appears many times on this box, because there is no added flavoring in this instance. It feels appropriate for a nature painting because in my mind, nature always feels “pure”. This is true even when I consider the dirt in which a seed grows, the bugs that live on the trunk and leaves, and the birds who roost and leave their droppings among the branches. Still, somehow nature feels more pure than our own tidy dwellings and organized lives.

This piece has finished, gallery wrapped sides and thus is ready to hang without a frame.

An interesting thing about the original LaCroix box is how many times the word “innocent!” appears (with the exclamation). It makes me smile, because I truly wonder how many people feel not-innocent when drinking bubbly water?

Painting on unconventional surfaces has always been interesting to me, and upcycling is important to my life philosophy and artistic practice. This lively, lush painting of sea nettle jellyfish is presented on a box that once housed a metal gas can. The composition featuring the two jellyfish leverages image components and catchphrases printed on the original box. The bottom and top edges of the box are left raw, exposing the corrugated cardboard.

The green tones in this skin recall a snake, a dragon or even an alligator. This piece is a reverse painting, first created with a skin texture and then more layers painted over it from the back side of the glass.

Due to the fragile nature of painting on glass, this piece – like all of my glass pieces – comes framed.

Perhaps it is a dragon whose beautiful red skin glows so warm. This piece is a reverse painting, first created with a skin texture and then more layers painted over it from the back side of the glass.

Due to the fragile nature of painting on glass, this piece – like all of my glass pieces – comes framed.

Circles of Sound & Light, 12 inches, oil

Original oil paintings, these pieces combine a musician’s tool with a painter’s tool: the circle of fifths and a color wheel. They are truly functional art pieces, useful as a tool for composing whether you are a musician, a painter, or both. The markers in the photo are there to show the size of the pieces.

The twelve tones in diatonic music theory and the twelve colors in a color wheel are portrayed together with other visual elements that make each piece unique. One piece features phases of the moon. Another features thickly painted golden textures. All four pieces have a twelve-point star hand-sewn with thread in the middle. The star’s edges point to different combinations for planning a color scheme: triads and tetrahedrons.

Each piece is painted on a 12-inch diameter archival canvas that has a sloped, rounded edge. They are ready to hang with no need for a frame.

Loquat Morning, 18×14, oil

Loquats are such an expressive fruit tree: branches that can head off in random directions, dark green leaves with a hint of velvet fur, and then the gorgeous pops of color that come from apricot-looking fruits that have a subtle but distinctive taste. I tend to paint this plant on overcast days, and the muted purple sky makes all the colors pop even more.

This piece is painted on a 1 inch cradled wood panel, and thus is ready to hang as-is or can be framed.

These irises were painted from life in my yard and then finished in studio. I paint flowers, landscapes and people from life every spring as a way to celebrate my birthday: new life all around, and a shiny new year for me. This piece is meant to evoke a sense of serenity, partnering a waking city and blooms anticipating the rising sun. The palette is purposefully limited to accentuate the deepness of the violet petals, the gold in the iris beards, and the twinkling lights in the background.

Iconic Saddle Rock, as seen from the Ryan Mountain Trail in Joshua Tree National Park. At the end of the day when the sun lights up the entire view with a warm glow, there is a feeling of awe and serenity.

Little wildflowers line the age-worn rocks alongside the trail. This piece is a quiet moment, witnessing the power and vastness of a special place.
