Imagine what spring is like for a honeybee. Warm days in the sun, chilly nights when you’re not in the hive, and foraging for food among the freshly blooming flowers. What does a citrus tree look like to a bee? The bee is not interested in the fruit at all. It is the pollen. Abundant, beckoning. With this piece and its companion piece “Devour”, I wanted to catch the bees at work, fully engrossed in their gathering task, and lured – like a flashing neon sign – to the pollen in the trees.

Careful rendering of the blossoms and bees with delicate yet decisive brush strokes, this piece is a balance between classic oil painting and the modern underpainting of neon yellow. It glows even in daylight. The composition extends out into the frame, fading a little as we reach the frame edge, like a vision or a dream.
