Artificial, 24×20, reverse paint on glass
“Thou shalt not make a machine in the image of man’s mind.” – Frank Herbert, Dune
This piece incorporates a variety of items in a print-making way. Seeds, eggshells, cooked spaghetti, and various machine parts were used to make impressions on the glass. Transitioning from the visceral bright red to the cool blue tones, we have the interface of living things that will fairly soon rot, versus entities that may never decompose but are – at this point in time – non-living.
Reverse-painted words echo after the title, “Artificial”. Thus, “Artificial Imminence”, Artificial Insolence”, and so forth. I feel most of humanity’s problems (especially the ones for which large tech companies purport AI to be the solution) remain unsolved not due to a lack of intelligence, but a lack of love. Specifically, the love that respects another culture’s perspective and considers the needs of other plant and animal species with whom we share this world.
The sides of this piece are also painted, and it is ready to hang as the frame is an integral part of the painting.
