Sphinx & Windflower, 7.5″, oil & mixed media

This piece is a three-dimensional trick of the eye, featuring gloriously painted moon poppies wavering in the wind as a handcrafted sphinx moth explores one. The flowers are painted in oil and from life. The moth is completely crafted from scratch from upcycled materials – plastic lids cut to make the wing shape, old guitar strings for the legs, and the body molded from glue to support them. When people see this piece, they ask if the moth is real. Definitely a real moth spirit, but no moths injured in the making! It comes framed as shown, the frame is an espresso brown and has a subtle sheen as well.
