I’ve wanted to paint the breathtaking blooms of the yucca plant in our yard for years. And I’m so happy with how this turned out! A moment in time, focused by the round format. The circle itself is constructed from old scratched music CDs, adhered together, paper mached, and then gesso-ed and sealed for painting oil. Within this round painting, there is literally music and a new purpose.

Note, this is a small piece, the size of a music CD: about 4.75 inches in diameter.

Light dancing through the clouds at the edges of the day, inviting our minds into less heavy places. This is a delicately painted oil piece, and uses a circle to guide our eyes upward. The circle itself is constructed from old scratched music CDs, adhered together, paper mached, and then gesso-ed and sealed for painting oil. This is a tiny painting, a desert jewel to behold. At 4.75 inches tall, it was painted from life as the sun was setting on a hot day, and is a testament to the hardiness prickly pear cacti common to SoCal. The sides are .75 inch wide and painted gold, so you can display with or without a frame.

Scarred Hearts, handmade necklaces

I created a large paper mache heart as part of a costume, and wanted to make miniature hearts to accompany it. This limited run of clay hearts is the result. There are six hearts, each completely unique and made from upcycled electric wiring and clay. These necklaces are about resilience, healing, and strength.

There are two options for the necklace chains, although you can also remove the heart charm and put it on any necklace of your own that you like. The options I offer are rose-gold chain or an iron-gray chain, both shown below.

Royal Bees on small rounds, mixed media

These little bees are royalty. Handcrafted from scratch and sporting tiny crowns, they each rest on a beautiful stand featuring a shimmering paper mache flower. There are four unique royal ladies, as shown below. The bees are made from cut plastic container lids, old guitar strings, velcro and glue. Their stands are made from tiny software installation CDs paper-mached into a round, and the flowers have second-hand crafting balls and beads inside them. Regal through and through, each is named after a powerful gemstone.

A little gem of a painting, featuring air, water, and life. Two palm trees reflect in a pool, where under the rippling water we see a koi fish. A lot of movement and glimmer in a small piece, the detail and looseness are balanced to draw you in as if you were standing right at the edge of this pond.

This piece is a three-dimensional trick of the eye, featuring gloriously painted moon poppies wavering in the wind as a handcrafted sphinx moth explores one. The flowers are painted in oil and from life. The moth is completely crafted from scratch from upcycled materials – plastic lids cut to make the wing shape, old guitar strings for the legs, and the body molded from glue to support them. When people see this piece, they ask if the moth is real. Definitely a real moth spirit, but no moths injured in the making! It comes framed as shown, the frame is an espresso brown and has a subtle sheen as well.

For cat lovers, dealing with the litterbox is a fact of life. This light-hearted piece features kitties at their best, composing music and making art! Created by adhering a litter deodorizer box label to a wood panel and then adding delicate painted details, this piece transforms the mundane into a “litter-al” art part. Double-duty refers to not only the “freshen and deodorizing” aspect but also to the color-wheel/circle of fifths in the center of the piece. This wheel can be used for composing music or color plans for art. The two kitties in the piece embody that creative spirit at work.

If you know, you know: kitties love Churu treats, and this piece is a playful take on the packaging. Integrating the actual front packaging of a churu box, I then reverse-painted an underwater scene on the plastic front panel. The kitties hold on to dear life riding the back of an orca, as they face off with a hungry squid in a surreal reversal of roles.

A moody sky is broken by a rainbow and Nerds. Inspired by the colorful list of dyes in the candies, this piece balances subtle shimmery rainbow hues, a dusky feel, and a sense of humor. The ingredients list of a Nerds candy box and the Nerds characters are adhered to the panel, and then a glorious carefully painted skyscape is added to complete the story.

Part of a series integrating packaging with precise oil painting, this piece uses a Raisin Bran box as a background to a west coast sunrise. Delicately painted poppies weave through a rockscape of bran flakes, with waves crashing and two scoops of love.

Featuring the scrumptious loquats that grow on our tree, this little piece is a lighthearted mix of a fancy textured oil painting and the advertising on a LaCroix box. I adhered the label of a LaCroix package to a 6×6 panel, and then painted onto the front and sides to create a design that lets a little of the label show through. But the star of the show are the fruits!

This piece made its debut at the 2024 National Orange Show. It dovetails with a larger, more formal piece called “Citrus Paradisi“, because we cannot have a citrus-themed show without including the invasive fruit flies that have ravaged Southern California this year.

Redlands was in a fruit quarantine zone where many residents had their fruit picked and destroyed by the county. A small price for slowing the spread of an invasive fly that cripples crops statewide, but still traumatic for locals who love their trees and may not have directly seen the fly on their properties.

The perspective of the piece is that we are within a glass cell with several of the flies. They walk on the window, looking through it to a citrus tree beyond. The flies are made with upcycled plastic, old guitar strings, glue, and acrylic paint. Although a threat in real life, they are quite charismatic as miniature sculptures on this work.

A gorgeous sunny afternoon with clouds dancing overhead, painting from the marshy shore in Morro Bay. Watching the ducks and egrets alight and take off was as much a joy as painting this scene.
